Rockbridge County is a beautiful county located in the Shenandoah Valley on the western edge of the Commonwealth of Virginia. According to the 2020 census, the county has a population of 22,650, and its county seat is the city of Lexington. Rockbridge County completely surrounds the independent cities of Buena Vista and Lexington. For statistical purposes, the Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the independent cities of Buena Vista and Lexington with Rockbridge County.
Rockbridge County was established in October 1777, and its first county elections were held in May 1778. The county was formed from parts of neighboring Augusta and Botetourt counties. It was named after the Natural Bridge, a notable landmark located in the southern portion of the county. The creation of the county was intended to reduce the amount of travel required to reach the nearest courthouse and to ensure that trials were held fairly among friends rather than strangers. The first court session in Rockbridge County was held at the home of Samuel Wallace on April 7, 1778.
Slavery was far less prevalent in Rockbridge County than in many other parts of Virginia, and as a result, the anti-slavery movement was stronger in the area. For instance, several faculty members at Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) vigorously opposed slavery. However, many of the wealthiest residents of Rockbridge County owned slaves and passed them down to their widows and children.
Rockbridge County is also notable as the location where Cyrus McCormick invented the reaper. This occurred near Steele's Tavern, which is located at the northern end of the county. Today, Rockbridge County remains a beautiful and historic area, with a rich cultural heritage and many landmarks and attractions for visitors to explore.

The Anderson Hollow Archaeological District is a complex of historical sites located in rural Rockbridge County, Virginia. The area contains at least seven known prehistoric and historic sites, providing insight into the rich cultural history of the region. The sites include evidence of American pioneer settlement sites from the early 19th century, as well as sites that were occupied as recently as 1960.
Visitors to the Anderson Hollow Archaeological District can see the remains of stone foundations, the chimney remains of log houses, and other artifacts that offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who lived there across various time periods. The district is an excellent example of how the area developed and changed over time, from its prehistoric origins to the present day.
The Anderson Hollow Archaeological District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, recognizing its cultural and historical significance.
